What does a mindset coach do? 5 things to look for.
What does a mindset coach do you ask?
Are you familiar with the phrase “mindset is everything”?
It stems from cause and effect that our beliefs become our thoughts, our thoughts become our actions and our actions determine our character and success.
A mindset coach will ask more of you than you would ask of yourself. They will challenge you. They are outcome driven and will hold you responsible and accountable. They are honest, great rapport builders, effective communicators, have a growth mindset, deep listening skills, are judgement free, creative, and strategic thinkers.
They are people who get things done. They love outcomes and are generally driven by progress and results!
A mindset coach can be any kind of coach from business, executive, life, pro athlete and so on. It comes down to marketing, who the coach is targeting, the niche they wish to work in.
A good mindset coach will use a range of modalities, skills and therapies such as NLP, Positive Psychology, Hypnotherapy, Mindfulness to name a few. A qualified coach will have tools to gain an insight and understanding of their clients, the way their clients think and how their clients respond to the world around them. These modalities and tools are designed to shift perception, rewire minds and as a result, change and improve lives.
There’s a great 2019 article by Forbes magazine that outlines the 5 things to look out for in an Executive Coach, I would go as far to say …to look out for in any coach.
The five things to look for that are outlined in the article are:
You are the only client (you have the coaches FULL attention when you are with them)
They challenge you (transformation is challenging)
They work from the inside out (they have a good EQ and sense and self-awareness)
They’re a learner (with a growth mindset)
You have good chemistry (you have good rapport)
In 2010 Eric Schmidt, Google CEO at the time in an interview with Fortune magazine outlined one of the most important things that senior executives in Google were doing, which was using a coach.
From the 40 second video you will hear Eric outline why everyone needs a coach, he states “ You need to have a coach. Our board member in 2002 John Doerr said you need a coach, and I said “well I don’t know I’m an established CEO why would I need a coach is something wrong?” “no you need a coach everybody needs a coach” so Bill Campbell became my coach and served Google very well. Every famous athlete, every famous performer has somebody who’s a coach somebody who can watch with they are doing and say is that what you really meant? Did you really do that? They can give them perspective — the one thing people are never good at is seeing themselves as others see them. A coach really, really helps.”
